Gaels Prevail in Overtime Thriller at BYU
The Gaels’ late game execution and true grit defeated BYU, 74-64, Saturday afternoon at the Marriott Center. Saint Mary’s finished strong and shutdown the Cougars offense in the extra period. The Gaels claimed their biggest lead of the game at the 1:07 mark after Calvin Hermanson drained a corner trey for the 70-62 lead. The Gaels defense clamped down and forced BYU to just four points and 1-of-7 from the floor in overtime. Landale finished with 31 points on 13-for-15 shooting and 13 rebounds.
Four in a Row Over BYU
With Saturday’s win, the Gaels have defeated BYU four consecutive times for just the second time in program history (12/29/11-2/21/13). Versus BYU, the Gaels are 5-9 on the road, 6-2 at home, and 1-1 in neutral site contests.
Jock’s Rise Continues
Eight double-doubles on the season, six in the past seven games, Jock Landale continues to lead the efficient Gaels offense. His 21.8 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 66 percent field-goal percentage and eight double-doubles are all tops in the WCC. The senior leads the country in field-goals made (132). His career 62.4 percent shooting would be first in the Gaels’ record for career field-goal percentage. In the overtime win at BYU, Landale scored 12 of the Gaels’ first 21 points and played a career-high 44 minutes.
3-0 Starts in Conference
The Gaels have started WCC play 3-0 in every season since 2014-15. Under head coach Randy Bennett, SMC has started the conference season with three straight wins seven times.
Taking Care of the Ball
Despite tying a season-high 15 turnovers Saturday, the Gaels still lead the country with the fewest turnovers per game (9.1).With this pace, this year’s team would mark the fewest turnovers by the Gaels under Randy Bennett.
Gaels Tame the Tigers
Since 2012, SMC has won nine straight over Pacific. The Gaels are 9-1 in the last 10 matchups. Saint Mary’s is 5-0 at home versus Pacific since 12/19/12. The average win margin at home since 2012 is 15.4 points.
Can Anyone Cool Down Naar?
Emmett Naar is 2nd in the program’s all-time list for assists (669). Naar is first in the WCC and second in the country in assists per game (9.1). The senior has recorded at least seven assists in 13 consecutive games. He currently leads the WCC with 37.5 minutes player per game (6th in NCAA). The senior is first in assist-turnover ratio at 3.5 (12th in NCAA).
About the Tigers
Pacific is coming off a six-point, 88-82 home win over Loyola Marymount for the season’s first conference win. The Tigers fell to Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash., 81-48.
