MBK | Landale Selected to Lute Olson Watch List

Nov. 7, 2017

BOSTON — Saint Mary’s Jock Landale has been named to his third preseason watch list following the announcement of the Lute Olson Award Watch List this week. The Gaels’ center has received several recognitions prior to the 2017-18 season including placement on the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award and Oscar Robertson Trophy watch lists.

The Lute Olson Award is given to nation’s top Div. 1 men’s basketball player who has played at least two seasons. The award began in 2010 and is named after legendary men’s hoops coach Lute Olson who won 780 games as a head coach, most notably at the University of Arizona.

Other players selected to the Lute Olson watch list include senior Bonzie Colson of Notre Dame, senior Joel Berry II of UNC, and junior Reid Travis from Stanford. Outside of Landale and Travis, Chima Moneke from UC Davis is only other player from a northern California program nominated to the watch list.

Previous recipients of the award include Kemba Walker (2011), Doug McDermott (2012, 2014) and Caleb Swanigan (2017).

No other members of the West Coast Conference were selected for the Lute Olson Award.

Landale emerged onto the national spotlight after an excellent junior season that helped propel the Gaels to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Landale averaged 16.9 points and 9.5 rebounds per contest as Saint Mary’s main big man and recorded a career-high 33 points in last year’s season opener versus Nevada.
