GOLF | Hathcoat Captures Saguaro Amateur Title in Arizona

Jan. 5, 2018 Final Scores

MARICOPA, Ariz. -- Saint Mary’s golfer Blake Hathcoat used a strong finish to force a sudden-death playoff, and eventually capture the coveted title at the Saguaro Amateur golf championship at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club on Thursday afternoon.

Four shots behind the leader entering the final day, Hathcoat, now a sophomore at Saint Mary’s, birdied holes 13 to 18 in the final round to force the playoff with Drew McCullough of Wyoming. The Gael showcased an extra gear late in the final round, as he stuck his approach shot on the 18th hole just four-feet away from the hole for the impressive birdie.

“It is great to see Blake break through with a top-tier amateur victory,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Scott Hardy. “Beating a field of 112 talented collegiate players is going to go a long way for his confidence.”

In the sudden-death playoff, both players went shot-for-shot, and nearly birdied the first playoff hole. Hathcoat captured the impressive victory on the second playoff hole with a nice par save.

“Blake is a rising sophomore and I believe we are just starting to see his potential to play at a very high level,” stated Hardy.

Ryan Knop of Auburn (-10), David Laskin of Arizona (-9) and Koichiro Ishika of Arizona State finished the top-5 of the strong field of top collegiate golfers.

The Saguaro Amateur is a 54-hole, no cut, men’s amateur golf tournament played at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Arizona, on the southern edge of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The Saguaro Amateur is considered as an established national amateur golf championship.

Saint Mary’s tees off the championship season at the Arizona Intercollegiate from Jan. 29-30.
