GOLF | Gaels Finish Fourth at Tough Arizona Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. — In the spring season’s first tournament, Saint Mary’s golf collected a top-5 finish in an elite field that included a pair of top-5 programs, as the Gaels finished in solo fourth at the Arizona Intercollegiate at Sewailo Golf Course.

THOUGHTS WITH HARDY

  • “I thought that the tournament went fairly well. It is always good to start the spring season with a solid finish over several nationally-ranked teams.”
  • “We worked hard to get ready for this event and it is nice to see that preparation pay off. We have some things to sharpen up and improve before we compete again. That will be our focus the next two weeks as we prepare for the next tournament.”

FINAL LEADERBOARD

  • Trailing by 11 strokes entering the final round, host Arizona completed the comeback to capture its seventh title at the intercollegiate. The Wildcats finished with a final round 269 to win the tournament at 10-over par. 
  • No. 4 Texas A&M finished in second at 12-over par, while No. 5 Baylor finished in third at 14-over par. The Gaels ended the two-day tournament at 23-over par, while fellow West Coast Conference member BYU finished in fifth at 31-over par. 

FINAL ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

  • Seniors Perry Cohen and Connor Blick both tied for 15th at 7-over par, while freshman Ash Hakim finished tied for 19th after shooting five birdies in the final round.
  • Cohen shot a team-low 70 in the final round with five birdies. 
  • Pavan Sagoo and Blake Hathcoat ended the tournament tied-34th.
     
  • Brandon Jacobs and Dylan VanderVeer each finished in the top-5 of the Medalist leaderboard. Jacobs fired a final round 69 to place second on the leaderboard at 1-under par. Vanderveer placed tied-4th at even-par for the tournament. 

 

 

UP NEXT: JOHN BURNS

  • Saint Mary’s will cross the Pacific to Wailua GC in Kauai for the the John Burns Intercollegiate from Feb. 14-16.
