GOLF | Gaels in Fifth After Opening Round in Hawai'i

LIHU’E, Hawai’i. — In a steady opening round, Saint Mary’s golf shot a 3-under 285 to be tied for fifth place in the strong field at the John A. Burns Intercollegiate Thursday afternoon at the Wailua Golf Course.


  • UNLV blew past the field on the opening day, shooting an opening round 270 to finish at 18-under par. The Rebels are 13 strokes ahead of second place and nationally-ranked No. 4 Texas A&M (-5). North Carolina and BYU are tied-third at 4-under par. 
  • Along with the Gaels, Utah also sits at 3-under par to round out the top-5 of the leaderboard. 


  • Senior Perry Cohen shot a team best 68 (-4) with five birdies and just one bogey in the round to be tied-fourth on the leaderboard. 

  • Connor Blick fired a first round 71 to sit tied-18th. Blick had five birdies on the day and three consecutive birdies on holes 7, 8 and 9. 

  • Pavan Sagoo and Blake Hathcoat are both tied-34th after 1-over in the opening round. 

  • For the round, Saint Mary’s was second in the field for par 4 scoring (+2).
