GOLF | Gaels In Second After Opening Round at Desert Mountain

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — No. 34 Saint Mary’s boasted a strong opening round at the Desert Mountain Intercollegiate to hold second place before play was suspended due to darkness later in the afternoon. Pavan Sagoo and Perry Cohen are both tied for second in the field of 69 heading into Sunday’s action.

No. 44 Kansas currently leads the pack at 12-under and has a 14 stroke lead over the second place Gaels. Purdue, Michigan, and Utah round out the final five, respectively, in the 12-team event.

Blake Tomlinson of Utah leads all individuals after one round at 7-under par. Five players, including Sagoo and Cohen, sit tied for second not far behind at 5-under. Connor Blick also stands among the top-20 at 17th with a 2-over score.


  • The senior duo of Cohen and Sagoo finished in second and third on the first round leaderboard, respectively. 
  • Cohen shot an opening round 66 (-6) highlighted with eight birdies and just two bogeys. He also went bogey-free on the back nine. 
  • Sagoo shot six birdies and just one bogey during his opening round 67. The London, England native led the field in the first round in par 3 scoring (-2). 
  • Cohen shot 4-under on the par 4’s to lead the field in par 4 scoring. 

  • SMC had completed between 14 and 17 holes before play was suspended due to darkness. 
  • Sagoo was 1-under through 17 holes and had four birdies on the back nine. 
  • Complete results will be posted after the completion of the round which resumes tomorrow morning and will immediately be followed by the final round. 

  • Saint Mary’s will resume the second round at 7 a.m. PST.
