GOLF | Gaels Grind Through Tough Conditions at NCAA Regional

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — After a 70 minute weather delay due to heavy rain, thunder and unplayable greens, Saint Mary’s was able to finish the opening round of the 2018 NCAA Regionals with a 1-over 289 to sit in 11th place heading into the second round at the Reunion Resort- Watson course.

SECOND ROUND TEE TIME
Saint Mary’s will tee off the second round at 8:55 a.m. EDT on hole 10. Followers can view hole by hole scoring here via Golfstat.

OPENING ROUND LEADERBOARD
A pair of in-state programs hold the top two spots of the leaderboard, as No. 8 Florida and regional host Central Florida are tied for the lead at 12-under par. No. 29 Kent State is in solo third at 8-under, while No. 20 South Florida is in fourth at 6-under. No. 5 Vanderbilt and No. 17 North Carolina are tied-fifth after shooting 283 to sit at 5-under par.

No. 32 Arizona is in seventh-place at 4-under par, while Jacksonville State is eighth on the leaderboard after shooting 2-under 286. No. 41 Purdue and No. 44 Colorado State are tied-ninth at even-par to round out the top 10.

OPENING ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

  • Senior Perry Cohen fired the low round for the Gaels with a 2-under 70. Cohen opened with three birdies in his opening nine holes, and also converted birdies on holes 11, 17 and 18. 
  • Cohen is tied-16th in the 75-player field.
  • Fellow senior Connor Blick is tied-33rd at even-par after a strong finish to his round. Blick shot 3-under in his back nine with birdies on 11, 17 and 18. 
  • Pavan Sagoo shot a 1-over 73 with birdies on holes 1, 12 and 17. 
  • In his first NCAA Regionals appearance, Blake Hathcoat finished the opening round with a 2-over 74. The second year player opened his round with birdies on holes 1 and 2. 
  • Also in his first NCAA postseason appearance, freshman Ash Hakim finished with a 4-over 76.
NOTES AND STATS
  • The Gaels are third in the field in par 4 scoring, averaging 4.04 strokes on the par 4 holes. 
  • SMC is tied-third for most birdies in the field with 18.
