GOLF | Gaels in Fourth After Day 1 at SMC Invite

Hosting its strongest field in tournament history, the Saint Mary's golf team shot a 285, 1-over round to start the 2017 Saint Mary's Invitational, as the Gaels finished the first round in fourth place Monday.


Fellow West Coast Conference competitor San Francisco sits atop the leaderboard after firing off a 3-under 281. Stanford and Colorado State are tied for second at 1-under par, while the Gaels (+1) and USC (+3) round out the top-5 of the leaderboard.

Winners of the last two Saint Mary's Invitationals, San Diego State finished day one in sixth place at 5-over par. BYU finished in seventh (290, +6) while Santa Clara is tied-9th at 9-over par.

  • Connor Blick led SMC with a 3-under 68 (seven birdies, two bogeys and one double bogey).
  • Blick carded five birdies in the front nine of the course and is currently in fifth place.
  • Ash Hakim ended tied-8th after shooting a 1-under 70 in his Saint Mary's Invitational debut.
  • Senior Pavan Sagoo concluded Monday with a steady even-par 71 and is tied-16th. 
  • Sagoo started the first nine holes 2-over, but shot three birdies in a five hole stretch.
  • Playing as an individual, Brandon Jacobs ended the first round with a 1-under 70. Jacobs opened the round with back-to-back birdies on holes 1 and 2. 
  • Jacobs (tied-8th) and Max Ferrari (tied-16th) shot the low rounds of the day out of the 10 competing individuals.
  • SMC leads the field in birdies made (20) after the opening round.
  • The second round will begin at 7:30 a.m. (10th tee) and 7:35 a.m. (1st tee).
