GOLF | SMC Duo Lead Individuals At SMC Invitational #SMCINV15

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Saint Mary's golfers Jonathan De Los Reyes and Pavan Sagoo are tied for the individual lead and the Gaels sit in second place after the second round of competition at the annual Saint Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course.

San Diego State leads the 15-team team field by seven strokes over second-place SMC after the Aztecs equaled the Gaels' first round score with a tournament-low 5-under par 279.  SDSU is 2-under for the tournament, while Saint Mary's enters tomorrow's final round at 5-over par.  Oregon State is in third place at 11-over, while UC Davis is fourth and Arizona sits in fifth at 16-over par.

De Los Reyes and Sagoo share the individual lead at 2-under par after the tournament's first 36 holes.  Both players carded 2-under par 69 in yesterday's first round then went even par today.  They lead four golfers that sit in a tie for third place at 1-under par.  Just eight of the event's 84 golfers are at even par or better after the first two rounds.

The field returns to Poppy Hills GC tomorrow for the tournament's final round.  Teams will start off the No. 1 and No. 10 tees beginning at 7:30 a.m.  Saint Mary's is paired with golfers from San Diego State and Oregon State and is scheduled to begin play at 9:10 a.m. off the first tee.

The Gaels started the day in first place after firing a 5-under par in yesterday's first round.  SMC opened the round with a solid 2-over par on the front nine before struggling to find low scores on the back.  As a team, the Gaels shot a 14-over on the back nine to drop behind SDSU.

After going 1-over on the front nine, Sagoo was able to rebound with birdies on holes 11, 13 and 14 and went 1-under on the back to finish at even par for the day.

"I had a solid round today, for the most part," said Sagoo.  "I had some mental errors and had to fight for birdies, so it a bit up and down.  I haven't putted particularly well in either round, so if I can correct that I should be able to have the opportunity to shoot a low round tomorrow.  The key will be to just keep doing what I've been doing."

De Los Reyes, who owns the competitive course record since Poppy Hills GC underwent a renovation in 2014 with a 6-under par 65 during the NCGA Amateur Stroke Play Championships last summer, registered three birdies and three bogeys during today's round.

Sophomore Roman Aragon is tied for 18th place with rounds of 69-76 for a 3-over par 145.  Junior Hunter Rappleye is tied for 35th at 7-over, while sophomore Perry Cohen is at 9-over par and is tied for 45th place.

Senior Maclayne Marr and sophomore Connor Blick are participating in the tournament as individuals and sit in ties for 13th and 22nd places, respectively.  Marr carded rounds of 71-73 for a 2-over par 144, while Blick went 73-73 and is 4-over.  Since they are playing as individuals, neither player's scores count toward the team totals during the tournament.
