Nov. 14, 2017 | WCC Release

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Saint Mary’s men’s soccer had four student-athletes selected to the 2017 All-West Coast Conference honors, the conference announced today.

Jake Rudel was named First Team All-WCC for the first time in his career, Stephen Dougherty was honored on the Second Team, defender Tobias Clauss was named Honorable Mention, while freshman defender Filippo Zattarin was named on the WCC All Freshman Team.

Rudel had a career year for the Gaels after leading the squad with six goals and 13 points. The sophomore shifted roles in his second season after being named on the WCC All Freshman Team in 2016 as a defender. The striker’s six goals ranked tied for third in the WCC with six goals.

In his junior campaign, Dougherty was a rock in the center of the Gaels midfield, aiding both the offense and defense with his steady play. The midfielder ended 2017 with three goals and two assists for eight points. The junior tied for third on the team in points and started 16 out of 17 matches.

In his lone season in Moraga, senior defender Clauss was a consistent performer on the Gaels backline. The 6-2 native of Germany started in all 17 matches and was second on the team in minutes played (1,582). The defender also notched two goals on the season, with his first career being the game winner at Gonzaga.

Named to the All Freshman Team, Zattarin led the Gaels in minutes played (1,596) and started in every game his freshman season. The 5-7 defender from Padua, Italy scored one goal and tied for the team lead in assists (4). He ranked tied-10th in the WCC in assists.

All five individual awards - including the all-conference teams - were voted on solely by the WCC's eight head coaches.
