MTEN | Gaels Fall at Portland in Front End of Road Trip

Saint Mary's will travel to Gonzaga to face the Bulldogs on April 14 at 12 p.m. PDT.

AS A SENIOR (2017-18): West Coast Conference All-Academic honoree... went 9-11 in singles matches during the dual season... won seven singles matches during the fall... Went 3-1 at the Pacific Invitational with three set win over Robert Seby of Santa Clara... Defeated Ajai Shekhera of UCSB in straight sets... Paired with Matis Bot in doubles... Went 6-6 in doubles matches... Went 1-1 at ITA Northwest Regional...began the spring by winning three of his first four doubles matches with Damon Kesaris...teamed up with Matis Bot for a 7-6 doubles win against BYU...picked up conference wins against Pacific and LMU in the No. 2 singles slot.

AS A JUNIOR (2016-17): Advanced to the singles quarterfinals during the first tournament of the year at the Aggie Invitational...also won in doubles at the Aggie Invitational...notched singles victories at both the ITA Regionals and SMC Invitational...played more matches during the spring than any other Gael...participated in 22 matches in both singles and doubles action...led the team in doubles wins (10) and was second in singles (8)...teamed up with Damon Kesaris as the top doubles pair...was named an All-WCC Honorable Mention in Doubles alongside Kesaris...won back-to-back singles conference matches against Gonzaga and No. 43 Portland...began the season with three straight singles wins as the Gaels' No. 1 seed...won consecutive doubles matches against USF and Santa Clara alongside Kesaris...went 2-0 while paired with Jacob Lagman.

AS A SOPHOMORE (2015-16): Advanced to the semifinals of the Men's A Consolation Doubles bracket in the Aggie Invitational...Paired with De Luis Lamales, defeated Matta/Shen of California, 8-5, in the first day of the ITA Regionals...Won the Singles "A" Consolation title of the Tiger Invitational after defeating teammate James Markiewicz 6-3, 7-6 (1) ... Emerged as one of the leaders, played primarily on court No. 2 in singles and doubles...Also competed as the No. 3 and No. 4 player for the Gaels...Recorded a 2-14 record in singles action...Won in dramatic fashion against Blaine Mengert of Sonoma State, 3-6, 6-1, 10-5...A key player in doubles, ended the season with a 5-13 doubles record...Won a key 7-5 victory alongside De Luis Lamelas against BYU...Was victorious over teams from Grand Canyon, Sonoma State, Sacramento State, Eastern Washington and BYU...Named to WCC All-Academic Honorable Mention.

AS A FRESHMAN (2014-15): Joined the singles lineup in February and made a major impact, ending the season as one of Saint Mary's hottest players ... Finished the season with a 5-6 singles record, picking up wins against players from Sonoma State, Gonzaga, Sacramento State, Santa Clara and San Francisco ... Won two three-set matches in his first season, including a marathon 6-7, 7-6, 6-4 win over Gonzaga's Vladimir Mijatovic that helped SMC pick up its best team win of the year ... Also saw sporadic time in the doubles lineup, going 2-4 with five different partners ... named to the WCC Commissioner's Honor Roll Bronze list for carrying a GPA between 3.00 and 3.49.

PRIOR TO SAINT MARY'S: Native of Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, Vollenweider comes to Moraga by way of Coomera Anglican College where he earned the prestigious 2014 Senior Sportsman of the Year award ... in 2013, qualified to represent the state of Queensland at the National School Tennis Championship (Pizzy Cup) and again in 2014 where he was also captain of the men's team ... a strong student, Vollenweider earned the Academic Credit Award at Coomera for four years in a row.
