Jan. 19, 2018

MORAGA, Calif. — On a cool day, Saint Mary’s men’s tennis got 2018 off to a solid start after defeating visiting Sacramento State in a competitive dual match, 4-3, at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.

“Today was a great win for the team,” said head coach Greg Kennett. “Our top doubles team defeated the best team in the region, and Nash [Vollenweider] played a solid match for us on court 2.”

The Gaels blew past the Hornets in doubles action, with convincing wins on courts 1 and 3 to head into singles action with the 1-0 advantage. Damon Kesaris and Nash Vollenweider showcased their top notch teamwork to the 6-2 victory on court 1. Matis Bot and Jacob Lagman were too much for the Hornets, as the duo won their match 6-1.

Kesaris and Vollenweider continued to lead the Gaels as each secured victories in singles competition. Bot faced a three-setter, but the sophomore pulled through in the end with the 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win.
The Gaels will continue 2018 at Fresno State on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 12 p.m. PT.
