MTEN | Gaels Host Sacramento State for Dual Season Opener

MORAGA, Calif. -- The spring is finally here as Saint Mary’s men’s tennis opens the new year by hosting Sacramento State on Friday, and traveling to Fresno State on Sunday for a pair of competitive dual matches to open 2018.

SMC will host the Hornets at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex at 2 p.m. PT on Friday. The Gaels will face Fresno State on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 1 p.m. PT.

The Gaels are coming off a strong fall filled with highly competitive programs. SMC presents a youthful crop of talent and strong senior leadership from Nash Vollenweider, Matthew Campana and Jacob Lagman.

Saint Mary’s is highlighted by reigning West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year, Damon Kesaris. The current sophomore was recently named on the All-WCC Preseason team after going 10-5 in singles competition his freshman campaign.

The Gaels return four players who played in at least six singles matches during last year’s dual campaign. Despite losing senior Manuel De Luis Lamelas, SMC will have an impressive crop of five veterans on the roster.

Sacramento State was selected to finish third in the Big Sky Preseason poll. The Hornets finished third in 2017 and return six key players who all played at least nine matches last season.

Already in full swing of things, Fresno State is a perfect 2-0 during the spring season after securing wins over Pacific and UC Davis. The Bulldogs defeated the Tigers and Aggies with the 4-1 score. After taking on the Gaels on Sunday, Fresno State will host UC Santa Cruz at 5 p.m. PT as part of the doubleheader.
