MTEN | Gaels Travel to Central Coast to Face Gauchos, Mustangs

March 1, 2018

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- After a near two-week break from competition, Saint Mary’s men’s tennis returns to action, this time on the road to face two quality Big West Conference opponents in UC Santa Barbara (5-4) and Cal Poly (7-4).

The Gaels will face reigning conference champion UCSB on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. SMC will then play last year’s Big West runner-up Cal Poly on March 4 at 11 a.m.

The last time SMC took the court was in a 4-3 win versus Grand Canyon. The Gaels (2-5) are led by sophomore Damon Kesaris, as the top singles player is 6-1 on court 1 during the dual season. Last year’s West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year continues to lead the Gaels with three victories in a row.

Doubles partner and second in the Gaels lineup, Nash Vollenweider is 4-3 on court 2 during singles action. The senior won in straight sets versus GCU for his fourth win of the spring season.

The Gauchos are currently on a two-match losing streak and are 2-1 versus the WCC. UCSB defeated San Francisco and Pacific, but narrowly fell to San Diego.

The Mustangs are 2-1 in their past three matches and are coming off a strong 5-2 win over Nevada. CP defeated the Dons, 6-1, but dropped a 5-2 match at Loyola Marymount.

Saint Mary’s returns home March 30 as the Gaels will host LMU for a 2 p.m. match.
