SAN BRUNO, Calif. -- The Saint Mary's women's basketball team received two first-place votes while being predicted to finish second in the 2017-18 West Coast Conference Preseason Coaches' Poll, and two Gaels were named to the all-WCC Preseason Team, announced Wednesday by the conference.

The Gaels (20-13, 13-5 WCC in 2016-17) received 72 points and two first-place votes in the poll, just seven points behind defending champion and preseason favorite Gonzaga (79, eight first place votes). BYU (20-12, 13-5 WCC) followed in third with 68 points. San Diego (14-16, 7-11 WCC) and Loyola Marymount (14-16, 9-9 WCC) were picked fourth and fifth with 54 and 48 points, respectively.

Stella Beck and Sydney Raggio were both named to the 2017-18 All-WCC Preseason Team. Beck was the do-all player for the Gaels last year, leading the team in scoring (13.0 points per game), assists (3.2 per game), and steals (1.5 per game), while finishing second in field goal percentage (54.6 percent) and third in rebounding (5.3 rebounds per game).

Raggio started all 33 games last year, averaging 10.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game. She had 17 double-figure scoring games with four double-doubles. She was the team's leading blocker with 28 and was third on the team in assists (1.9 per game).

Saint Mary's (20-13, 13-5 WCC in 2016-17) returns four starters and nine letterwinners from a squad that finished tied for second and reached the WCC Tournament championship game last season. The Gaels reached the postseason for the eighth straight year, qualifying for the Women's National Invitational Tournament after logging their sixth straight 20-win campaign.

On top of its returners, the Gaels have also added four new freshmen, all who experienced plenty of playoff and championship runs while collecting numerous individual accolades in their high school careers. SMC also welcomes 6-foot, 3-inch center Claire Ferguson into active duty after she redshirted last year as a transfer from TCU.

The 2017-18 season begins on Nov. 10 when the Gaels travel through the Caldecott Tunnel to face East Bay rival California in Berkeley. SMC opens its home slate two days later on Nov. 12, hosting Pac-12 Conference member Washington State for its home opener. Tickets are available for purchase on SMCGaels.com or by calling the SMC Ticket Office at (925) 631-GoTx.
