The Saint Mary's women's rowing team's varsity eight boat emerged victorious Saturday over Seattle and Santa Clara

The Saint Mary's women's rowing team collected a victory and two runner-up showings Saturday against Seattle and Santa Clara at Briones Reservoir.

ORINDA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s women’s rowing team grabbed a victory in the varsity eight race Saturday, as the Gaels hosted Seattle University and South Bay rival Santa Clara at Briones Reservoir.

The varsity eight boat of coxswain Emma Bangs, Jennifer Faulkner, Emily Milbrath, Sabrina Felix, Abbie McGill, Brianna Pero, Kelsey Shinn, Alexis McGuire and Emily Sprigings beat the Broncos and the Redhawks with a time of 7 minutes, 0.77 seconds. Santa Clara was second in 7:04.50 and Seattle was third in 7:16.88.

The Gaels also finished second in both the second varsity eight race and the varsity fours. SMC’s 2V8 boat was narrowly edged by SCU for the win by just three seconds, 7:22.07 to 7:25.74. The Gaels’ varsity four boat blew away the Broncos by nearly 20 seconds, finishing with a time of 8:37.63 while Seattle won the race in 8:16.41.

Saint Mary’s next travels to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 28 and 29 at Lake Natoma.
