ROW | Scott Joins Saint Mary's Coaching Staff

Gulliver Scott brings experience and winning ways to the SMC women's rowing coaching staff.

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary's women's rowing program will begin the 2017-18 season with a brand new assistant coach. Gulliver Scott, both a successful rowing coach and athlete, joins the Gaels this season, as announced by head coach Anna Pytlak.

Scott comes with nearly 20 years of coaching experience. He has served as a coach for both the boys and girls teams at Berkeley High School, including the last five years as head coach of the girls program. He coached at his alma mater Wesleyan University (Conn.) and also with clubs in the area. Scott currently serves as the head coach for the East Bay Rowing Club Men's team in Oakland.

He led Berkeley High to three consecutive medals in the USRowing Southwest Regionals, including a gold medal in 2015. Student-athletes who rowed under Scott at Berkeley High have gone on to compete at respected programs such as California, Stanford, UCLA, Williams College and Wesleyan University.

“I'm so glad that Gulliver decided to work with us,” said Pytlak. His experience building programs and producing fast athletes will add a lot to our team.”

Scott also had success as a student-athlete. He rowed varsity for four years at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. There, he was a two-time recipient of the Arthur Ashe Jr. Award for outstanding achievements by student-athletes of color (1995, '96). Before college, he was a varsity MVP at Berkeley High. He helped lead the Yellowjackets to a silver medal at the California Junior Championships, and participated in the 1992 USA Junior National Team Selection Camp in Ithaca, N.Y.

“Gulliver has already brought a great perspective to our planning so far,” added Pytlak, “which makes me excited for the direction we are headed both as a coaching staff and as a program.”

 

 

The Gaels look forward to the upcoming season with their new assistant coach. Saint Mary's will compete on Oct. 15 in the Head of the Port regatta in West Sacramento, Calif., to start the fall season.
