TEMPE, Ariz. — The Gaels (0-6) faced their stiffest competition during the Kajikawa Classic on their final day by taking on two ranked opponents in No. 15 Utah and No. 23 Arizona State.

Game 1
No. 15 Utah 5, Saint Mary’s 2

Saint Mary’s trailed the Utes by only a run heading into the bottom of the sixth inning thanks to an impressive pitching performance by Eileen Perez but Utah (2-3) would score three runs in the frame to take the game, 5-2.

Leilani Huey smacked a pinch hit homer over the left field fence in the top of the seventh for her first career home run. Huey’s long ball represented her third hit in her third pinch hit situation this season. Hailey Sparacino (double) and Hannah Chew (single) picked up the other two hits for the Gaels in the game.

Perez went 5.1 innings in the start and allowed four earned runs while striking out two. Eryn McCoy came in in relief and retired both batters she faced.

Game 2
No. 23 Arizona State 8, Saint Mary’s 4

Three Gaels had multi-hit performances in the final game of the Kajikawa Classic but Saint Mary’s came up short to No. 23 Arizona State (5-1) in a time shortened game, 8-4.

Sparacino went 2-for-3 from the three hole and crushed her third home run in as many days. The Gaels’ senior shortstop has already eclipsed her home run total from last season (2) through the team’s first six games.

Abbey Mariani and Julia McCormack each had two singles and a run scored as well. Nikki Alexander led the Gaels with three RBIs that came in the second inning. Saint Mary’s collected eight hits in total and also drew a base on balls.

The contest was called during the middle of the sixth inning due to a time limit being reached.

  • Saint Mary’s has hit five home runs through six contests and is only three away from tying their total from last year.
  • McCoy and Kimiko Zapanta are both 3-for-3 in stolen base opportunities this season.

The Gaels return to action next weekend in Fresno at the Bulldog Classic. The team will take on UC Davis, Bakersfield, and the host Fresno State during the two day tournament. Links for the games can be found on the Gaels’ schedule page.
