SB | Gaels Take Two From Roadrunners

MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's (2-11) got their first win of the season in Game 1 of their doubleheader Saturday against CSU Bakersfield and took the second game as well on the strength of four runs in the first two innings.

Game 1
Saint Mary's 4, Bakersfield 1

In the opener, Kimiko Zapanta got the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first and Julia McCormack opened the scoring with an RBI groundout later in the inning. Another run came in the bottom of the third from McCormack, followed by two runs in the bottom of the fourth courtesy of two Roadrunner errors.

Katlyn Whitt pitched five strong innings, giving up only three hits and a one run for her first win of the season. Whitt also struck out three and Eryn McCoy relieved her to get the save for the Gaels. The Gaels managed six hits against Bakersfield's Summer Evans with the 1-4 hitters accounting for four base knocks.

Bakersfield (1-11) got their sole run courtesy of a double by Chris Hipa in the top of the fourth inning.

Game 2

In the second contest, SMC got off to a fast start, scoring two runs in each of the first two innings.

In the opening frame, the Gaels loaded the bases and scored a run on an error by the Roadrunners' shortstop. Jaymee Campbell drove in the Gaels' next run on a hit by pitch.
Saint Mary's filled the bases once again in the second and McCormack delivered a two-RBI double down the right field line to extend the lead to four.

In the fifth, Nikki Alexander drove in Halle Sullivan on a single up the middle and would eventually come around to score on a wild pitch.

Eileen Perez picked up her first career win for the Gaels with a complete game performance. The freshman struck out five Roadrunners and scattered seven hits over seven frames.


  • Kimiko Zapanta stole two bases in Game 1, making her a perfect 10-for-10 on the season. 
  • Bakersfield committed four errors in both games. 
  • Nikki Alexander reached base five times between the two games. 


  • Saint Mary's will look to sweep the Roadrunners in the final game of the series tomorrow beginning at noon. Links for the game can be found on the Gaels' schedule page.
