SB | Gaels Come From Behind to Sweep CSU Bakersfield

MORAGA, Calif. -- After winning the first two of the series, Saint Mary's softball (3-11) came back for a dramatic win to sweep CSU Bakersfield (1-12) in extra innings, 5-4, Sunday afternoon at Cottrell field.

In extra innings for just the second time of the season, the Gaels punched in the game- winning run in the bottom of the eighth frame. Nikki Alexander drove in a hard single through the left gap of the infield to drive in Eryn McCoy.

CSU Bakersfield jumped out of the gate with two hits for the early 1-0 lead after the top of the first inning. The Gaels loaded the bases in the bottom of the first and quickly regained the lead off a two-out, two RBI double to the right field wall by Hannah Chew.

Tied 2-2, the Roadrunners regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth frame. Cydney Curran hit a double into the center field gap to score runs from first and second base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, freshman Kimiko Zapanta brought in the Gaels' third run with an infield single to score Bailey Lotz. SMC tallied the tying run off an Alexander single to left field. The second year player now leads the team with nine RBIs on the year.




  • Senior pitcher Katlyn Whitt secured her first two wins of the year this week and did not allow a single run in 14 innings pitched. 
  • Six different Gaels recorded a hit in today's extra inning win.


  • Saint Mary's returns to action for the UC Riverside Tournament from March 2-4. 
  • The Gaels will open the three-day tournament versus Stony Brook at 9 a.m. and UC Riverside at 2 p.m. PT.
