RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Gaels offense came alive on Saturday with seven hits and five stolen bases but came up short against Brown (3-4) in the third game of the UC Riverside Tournament, 5-3.

Saint Mary’s (4-15) struck first in the opening frame as Hailey Sparacino pulled a single into left field to allow Kimiko Zapanta to easily score from third. The Gaels managed to get two runners in scoring position later in the inning with just one out but a groundout and strikeout foiled the threat.

Brown scored two runs of their own in the bottom of the first on three hits and an SMC error. It didn’t take long for Saint Mary’s to respond however as Eryn McCoy took Bears’ starter Meghan Wimmer deep over the left field wall in the top of the second to even the score at two.

The Bears scored three more runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 5-2 lead that would hold for the remainder of the game. Nikki Alexander picked up her team-leading 10th RBI on a sixth inning single for the Gaels’ final run.

McCoy and Zapanta each had two hit games for the Gaels and combined for all three runs scored. The outfielders also swiped a bag each while three other Gaels recorded a stolen base in the game.

  • With five stolen bases on Saturday, the Gaels have surpassed their total from last season (28). SMC is 29-for-33 on stolen base opportunities this season.
  • Eryn McCoy’s second inning home run was the first of her career and sixth for Saint Mary’s this year.
  • Kimiko Zapanta leads SMC with a .443 on-base percentage.

  • Saint Mary’s will wrap up the UC Riverside Tournament with a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. against Stony Brook followed by a 2 p.m. showdown with UC Riverside. Links for the games can be found on the Gaels’ schedule page.
