March 8, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M — Saint Mary’s (5-16) will partake in their fourth tournament of the season this weekend as they travel down to the University of New Mexico for the Lobo Classic. The five game tournament kicks off on Friday and concludes on Sunday.

The Gaels will faceoff against three different schools at the tournament including Howard, Sacramento State, and the host, New Mexico. Doubleheaders will be played on Friday and Saturday and the tournament will wrap up on Sunday with a single contest against Howard. Further details on stats, broadcasts, and times can be found on the Gaels’ schedule page.

After a slow start to the season, SMC is 5-5 in their last 10 contests and went 4-2 in their six game homestand during the final week of February.

The Gaels’ offense is driven by two freshmen, Kimiko Zapanta and Julia McCormack, as well as their senior shortstop, Hailey Sparacino. All three Gaels are batting above .275 this year while Zapanta and Sparacino have reached base safely in over 40 percent of their plate appearances. McCormack and sophomore Nikki Alexander are tied for first on the team with 10 runs batted in each.

Senior Katlyn Whitt has taken the lion share of appearances in the circle for Saint Mary’s as she leads the team in starts (10) and innings pitched (58.2). Freshman Eileen Perez is not far behind with 54.2 innings this season and leads the team in strikeouts with 35.
