LOS ANGELES — Despite late-inning rallies in both games of their doubleheader, the Gaels (16-24, 2-6 WCC) dropped two matches against conference rival Loyola Marymount on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Loyola Marymount 2, Saint Mary's 0
After holding the Lions (18-29, 4-7 WCC) scoreless for five and two-thirds innings, LMU broke the 0-0 tie with a two-out two-RBI double to center and ultimately took the game by the same score, 2-0.
Saint Mary's had their chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning after a fielder's choice, single by Cara DiMercurio, and walk by Giana Bilotta loaded the bases with two outs. A strikeout looking ended the Gaels hopes however.
Katlyn Whitt (6-7) started in the circle for the Gaels and pitched well despite two errors by the defense behind her and one by her own doing. Whitt struck out two and walked none and gave up only five hits, two of which came in the two-run sixth inning.
Saint Mary's mustered six hits in the loss, including two off the bat of DiMercurio who had the only multi-hit performance for the Gaels. SMC leadoff hitter Nikki Alexander recorded a single in the loss as did first baseman Bailey Lotz.
Loyola Marymount 5, Saint Mary's 4
After finding themselves down 5-1 going into the final inning, the Gaels fought back to cross three runs across the plate but couldn't complete the comeback as they dropped the second game, 5-4.
Once again, Saint Mary's loaded the bases with two outs and had a chance to tie or take the lead, but LMU reliever Rachael Farrington induced a groundout to end the threat. Previously in the inning, the Gaels notched five hits including a DiMercurio RBI double.
The Gaels one through three hitters recorded three hits and two RBIs in the loss. Hailey Sparacino hit her second home run of the season in the first inning to give Saint Mary's an early 1-0 lead.
Katie Moss (8-10) started on the mound for the Gaels and threw a complete game with seven strikeouts. Unfortunately, Moss walked five and LMU totaled six hits to scratch across five runs in two different innings.
Saint Mary's will look to take the final game of the series tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Live stats for the game can be found on the Gaels' softball schedule page.
