SB | Gaels Fall Short at Pacific

May 07, 2017

STOCKTON, Calif. — Despite having a batter reach base in all but one inning, Saint Mary's fell 4-1 to Pacific (27-24, 10-5 WCC) in the third and final match of the weekend.

Saint Mary's (16-29, 2-10 WCC) notched seven hits in the game but only managed just one run in the seventh inning from a Giana Bilotta home run. Hailey Sparacino led the team with three hits and Eryn McCoy went 1-for-3 in the cleanup spot while also starting in the circle for the Gaels.

Saint Mary's had their best scoring chance in the opening frame after three consecutive singles loaded the bases with only one out. Pacific's Marissa Young (11-6) managed to wiggle out of trouble, however, by inducing a foul out and ground out.

The Gaels threatened again one inning later as Cara DiMercurio led off the inning with a double down the left field line. The next batter, Bailey Lotz, laid down a sacrifice bunt to push DiMercurio to third base but DiMercurio was left stranded as Saint Mary's hit two groundouts to end the inning.

McCoy (2-6) pitched well early on for the Gaels, allowing no runs and just two hits over the first three innings. But the Tigers eventually broke through in the fourth inning, lacing three extra-base hits, including a two-RBI home run, to take a 4-0 lead. Katie Moss entered in relief for McCoy and held Pacific scoreless in her 2.1 innings of work.

Saint Mary's will play their final series of the regular season next weekend against No. 20 BYU. The Gaels and Cougars will play one contest at 3 p.m. on Friday and finish up with a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon. Saint Mary's will honor their two graduating seniors, Katie Moss and Giana Bilotta, as part of Saturday's festivities.

Admission to these and all future Saint Mary's softball games are free and live stats for those not in attendance can be found on the Gaels' softball schedule page.
