SB | Gaels Host BYU, Honor Seniors in Final Series of 2017

May 10, 2017 MORAGA, Calif. — In their final series of the season, the Gaels play host to No. 20 BYU this weekend for a three-game set. The two teams will square off at 3 p.m. on Friday followed by a Saturday doubleheader beginning at noon.

Saint Mary's enters the last weekend of the series with a 16-29 record and are 2-10 in West Coast Conference play. The Gaels are looking to muscle out of a seven-game losing streak that dates back to Apr. 15.

The nationally-ranked Cougars come to Saint Mary's with a sterling 41-10 record and are in the midst of a 21-game win streak. With a 12-0 conference record, the Cougars have secured the WCC Championship and will play in the NCAA Regionals later this month.

As the final homestand for the Gaels, the team will honor its two seniors in Katie Moss and Giana Bilotta.

Moss leaves Saint Mary's as one of the Gaels' all-time pitching greats. As a freshman, she appeared in 27 games, mostly in relief, and pitched to a 3.12 ERA while leading the team in strikeouts, despite throwing 40 less innings than any other Gael. For her efforts, Katie was named the WCC Freshman of the Year and named to the All-WCC Second Team. As a sophomore, the Cupertino native led the team in ERA, innings pitched, and strikeouts as she posted a 12-7 record.

As a junior, Moss was one of the most dominant pitchers in the conference, leading the WCC in ERA (2.53) and earning All-WCC First Team honors. She has since continued her success into the current season, entering the weekend series with a 2.57 ERA and leading the team in multiple statistical categories such as strikeouts and batting average against.

Bilotta departs Saint Mary's as a key component of the team over the last four seasons. Her biggest season came in 2015 when she played in 49 games and recorded 22 RBIs as one of the offensive leaders for Saint Mary's. As a freshman, Bilotta posted a .963 fielding percentage and three sacrifice hits. Heading into the final series, Giana has tallied five career home runs, 46 total hits, 38 RBIs, and 25 walks for the Gaels.

Live stats for all three games can be found on the Gaels' softball schedule page.
