MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s beach volleyball team will head to Stanford for the Cardinal's Bay Area Kickoff tournament facing host Stanford and Sacramento State on Friday followed by San Francisco and Santa Clara on Saturday.

The Gaels kicked off the season Saturday with two victories, beating Pacific, 4-1, and East Bay rival California, 3-2. Saint Mary’s top pairs, Emily Bible and Lindsey Knudsen, and the team of Morgan Hughes and Payton Rund both won at the No .1 and No. 2 spots against Pacific. Sarah Chase and Mary Hernandez handedly took down the Tigers at the No. 3 spot. Madi Wilkerson and Sienna Young earned the Gaels’ fourth victory in the match at the No. 5 pairs.

Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen earned their first victory as a duo - and Knudsen’s first career win - with a three-set victory over the Bears at the No. 3 pairs. Bible and Knudsen, and Hughes and Rund switched spots against California. Hughes and Rund swept the Golden Bears' top pair of Jessica Gaffney and Iya Lindahl, 21-15, 21-14. Bible and Knudsen downed Cal's No. 2 pair also in straight sets, edging Bryce Bark and Madison Dueck, 26-24, in the first set before closing it out with a 21-11 victory in set two.

The Gaels started out the season with two victories against Pacific and California. Saint Mary’s will compete in its first tournament of the season at the Stanford Bay Area Kickoff. In the 2017 spring season, the Gaels fell to the Cardinal in the Stanford Tournament, 4-1, in its first meeting but then beat the Cardinal on the road, 4-1. SMC’s last meeting with the Hornets was in the 2016 beach season where it beat Sacramento State 4-1. Last season The Gaels took down Santa Clara and San Francisco in all three meetings, including one in the WCC Championship.

Saint Mary’s leaders Bible and Lindsey Knudsen and Rund and Hughes are 2-0 in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. Chase and Hernandez are 1-1 in the No. 3 spot. Lindsey Calvin and Kelsey Knudsen have a 1-1 record in the No. 4 pairs. Wilkerson and Young hold a 1-1 record in the No. 5 spot.

Stanford (0-4) competed in the Rainbow Wahine Classic in Honolulu and fell in all four matches against No. 3 UCLA and No. 5 Hawaii in matchups on Saturday and Sunday.

Courtney Bowen and Kate Formico led the Cardinal with a 3-1 record. Kathryn Plummer and Sunny Villapando posted a 2-2 record. Six other players for the Cardinals have not won a match to start the season.

Sacramento State (0-0) will open up its 2018 campaign at the Stanford Bay Area Kickoff against Pacific and Saint Mary’s on Friday. In their 2017 season the Hornets posted an 8-11 record. Morgan Stanley went 5-8 in the No. 1 spot followed by Madeline Cannon who was 5-9. Lexie Skalbeck went 7-6 in the No. 2 pairs. Sarah Davis and Kennedy Kurtz were 3-15 in the No. 3 spot. Hannah Meadows went 6-3 at No. 4 pairs. Courtney Dietrick and Brigitte Murdock went 7-7 in the No. 5 spot.

Santa Clara (0-0) will open their season at Stanford against San Francisco and Stanford on Friday. In the 2017 season the Bronocs held an 11-5 record. Nikki Hess went 1-14 in the No. 1 spot followed by teammate Allison Kantor who was 1-13. Kirsten Mead and Jensen Cunningham led the No. 2 pair with a 7-7 record. Taylor Laugero and Hailey Lindberg led the No. 3 record going 2-12. Michelle Gajdka and Tatiana San Juan went 4-11 in the No. 4 spot and Erin Reineking led the No. 3 spot with a 3-11 record.

San Francisco (0-0) will open up its 2018 beach season this Friday and Saturday against Santa Clara and Stanford on Friday. The Dons were 0-17 last season on the sand. Emily Reed played in the No. 1 spot with a 3-14 record followed by Nora Buvarp Lavik who went 3-14. Carly Lowry went 3-9 at the No. 3 spot and Dane Miller was 3-14. San Francisco did not win a single match in the No. 2, 4 and 5 spots.

Saint Mary’s will return home to take on Santa Clara for the second time this season on March 13 at Moraga Commons before traveling to East Bay rival California.
