WTEN | Gaels Sweep UC Santa Barbara, 4-0

Feb. 17, 2018

MORAGA, Calif. — Saint Mary’s women’s tennis (3-4) completed the sweep of reigning two-time Big West Conference champion UC Santa Barbara (3-5), defeating the Gauchos 4-0 Saturday afternoon at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.

The win marks the second straight for the Gaels after defeating Fresno State last weekend.

“Doubles was excellent and got us some momentum,” said head coach Simon Harston.

The Gaels got on the board quickly as No. 51 freshmen duo Mariia Kozyreva and Hind Abdelouahid won their third doubles match of the season. Playing for the first time together this spring, Clementine Clement and Aubane Ville dominated on court 3 to give SMC the point heading into singles action.

Abdelouahid won her second straight on court 2, coming from behind in an impressive three-set match. Seniors Emma Critser and Vanessa Nommensen played strong all day, winning in straight sets to help propel SMC to its third win of the spring season.

“Now it is time to concentrate on tomorrow at UC Davis,” explained Harston. “Davis is a really good team so we will need to show up like we did today.”

The Gaels and Aggies will face off tomorrow at 12 p.m. PT at the Marya Welch Tennis Center.
