WTEN | Gaels and Gators Go the Distance in Close Battle
Saint Mary's heads to Sacramento State for a dual match on Sunday.
MORAGA, Calif. — In a big match versus defending national champion Florida (4-4), Saint Mary’s women’s tennis (4-5) led the majority of the day, but a late push by UF sealed the come from behind win, 4-3, Friday afternoon at Timothy Korth Tennis Complex.
Both teams got off to hot starts in the doubles matches as UF got the upper hand on court 1. Aubane Ville and Clementine Clement continued to produce solid results together, as the duo cruised past its competition on court 3, 6-1.
Seniors Kareena Manji and Emma Critser clinched the doubles point for the Gaels in a back and forth battle on court 2. Tied 5-5, Manji and Critser used tough serves and aggressive strokes to overpower the Gators and capture the last two games for the 7-5 victory.
Filled with intense rallies and energy, the singles action went down the wire as the match was determined in a three-set marathon on court 5. It all came down between Florida’s Peggy Porter and Critser. After intense rallies, and phenomenal serving by both players, Porter started the third set strong and pulled away from Critser, 6-2.
Mariia Kozyreva picked up her second consecutive win in singles action as the first year player prevailed in straight sets. Senior Vanessa Nommensen collected her fourth straight win of the dual season in a three-set match on court 6. After dropping the first set 6-2, the senior pulled through with strong winners and accurate ground strokes for the comeback victory.
The Gaels travel to Sacramento State to face the Hornets on Sunday, Feb. 25 at 11 a.m. PT.
