MORAGA, Calif. -- Saint Mary's had a strong showing on Day 1 of the SMC Invitational on Friday as they recorded five wins overall, four of which came by freshmen.

Mariia Kozyreva and Aubane Ville combined for four wins in just their second collegiate tournament and played beautifully in both singles and doubles action. The freshmen duo defeated Rylee Braeden/Janaya Smith of Eastern Washington with a breezy 8-2 decision and then took down Cal's team of Alexis Nelson/Maria Smith, 8-5, to move to the semifinal round of the A flight.

In singles, Kozyreva rebounded from a first set loss to defeat Maayan Sela of Pacific, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Ville was also victorious in singles with a straight set win over Sacramento State's Maria Gonzalez, 6-4, 6-3.

Rounding out the Gaels' victories for the day was senior Kareena Manji who grinded out a win in three sets, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2, over Nikita Pradeep of UC Davis.
