Jan. 17, 2018

WCC Release

SAN BRUNO, Calif. — Voted solely by the 10 head coaches in the West Coast Conference, Saint Mary’s women’s tennis was picked to finish tied-fourth in the WCC Preseason Poll, it was announced today.

The Gaels finished as the three-seed in last year’s WCC Championship after a strong spring campaign that produced 12 wins. After losing accomplished senior Jana McCord, SMC collected 54 points to tie with San Diego for fourth place in the preseason poll.

Defending WCC champion Pepperdine was named first in the poll with the nine possible votes. Meanwhile, Loyola Marymount collected the final remaining first place vote and was voted to finish third, behind Gonzaga.

The Gaels will have a mix of rising youth and strong senior leadership in 2018. SMC currently has three seniors, one junior, one sophomore and three freshmen on the current roster.

Saint Marys will be back in action for the ITA Kickoff in Lubbock, Texas. The two day tournament will be from Jan. 26-27. The first home contest for the Gaels will be on Feb. 17 versus UC Santa Barbara at 12 p.m. PT.
