SPOKANE, Calif. — Lindsey Calvin led all players with a season-high 16 kills and Sienna Young set another career high with 15, but host Gonzaga was able to squeeze out a tight 3-2 (26-24, 16-25, 23-25, 25-20, 15-13) victory Thursday in both teams' West Coast Conference openers at the Martin Centre.


·      Thursday's match couldn't have been closer. It featured 20 ties and 11 lead changes across five sets. Three sets were determined by the minimum two points. All but one set was decided by five points or less. Saint Mary's (4-7, 0-1 WCC) and Gonzaga (6-7, 1-0 WCC) were within single digits of each other in seven statistical categories.

·      Gonzaga went on an 11-3 run in the first set to take a 21-15 lead, but Saint Mary's still managed to tie the set at 24-24 before falling 26-24. Gonzaga went on 3-1 runs to close both the first and fifth sets – key to its victory.

·      Saint Mary's held leads in every set but the fourth. The Gaels went on a 7-1 run in the fifth to take an 8-4 lead, but the Bulldogs answered with five straight points and a 7-1 run of their own to lead 11-9.


·      Calvin was just two kills short of her career high with 16. She hit a team-best .333 (minimum 10 attacks) and also had six blocks.

·      Aubrey Pitts set a career high with eight blocks. Saint Mary's finished the match with 12 total blocks. Seven Gaels had at least one block.

·      Young featured prominently on the attack, setting a career high with 15 kills on 35 attempts, just one behind lead attacker Calvin. It was her second double-figure kills performance of 2017.

·      Madi Wilkerson was only two digs short of her career high with a match-high 24. The total moved her to 1,044 career digs – 83 behind seventh place all-time at Saint Mary's, and 98 behind sixth place.
