MALIBU, Calif. - Another competitive match highlighted the Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team’s action at Pepperdine Saturday, but it was the Waves who came out on top, holding off the Gaels in a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) win at Firestone Fieldhouse.


• Pepperdine (11-6, 3-1 WCC) got out to an early big lead, starting the first set on an 11-3 run en route to a 25-18 win and a 1-0 match advantage. Six kills and three SMC errors sparked the run.

• Saint Mary’s (5-10, 1-4 WCC) returned the favor in set two, jumping out to a 12-5 lead before evening the match at 1-1 with a 25-23 victory. The Waves scored six straight points to tie it at 22-22, but Saint Mary’s closed on a 3-1 run including two kills from Sienna Young.

• Saint Mary’s was right with Pepperdine in both the third and fourth sets, but both times the Waves pulled away with big runs to win the sets and eventually the match. Pepperdine closed set three on a 5-1 run and set four on a 9-1 run.


Sienna Young (13) and Jennifer “Boo” Laird (11) led Saint Mary’s with double-figure kills. Young hit .344 and Laird hit a team-best .435 with her season-high kills total.

• Alexsa “Crash” Parker notched her third double-double of the season with 24 assists and 11 digs. She also had two kills. Fellow setter Mary Hernandez added 20 assists.

• Pepperdine had three players with double-figure kills and two who had double-doubles. Jasmine Gross led the way with 18 terminations. Hannah Frohling had 16 kills and 11 digs. Nikki Lyons had 11 put-downs and 12 digs.
