MORAGA, Calif. — Two Saint Mary’s volleyball players are representing their countries in international competition this month, with Lindsey Calvin taking part in the 2018 Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia, and Sarah Chase playing for the Canadian national women’s senior team at the Pan American Cup in the Dominican Republic.

This is the second summer that Chase will spend with her native Canadian national team. She was an alternate on the team last summer. This year’s cup is taking place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, July 8-14 at Ricardo Arias Pavilion. Canada is in Pool B with Peru, Costa Rica and host Dominican Republic. The top-five ranked teams at the end of the tournament will qualify for the Pan American Games to be held next year in Lima, Peru.

Chase will play at outside hitter for Canada after logging 80 kills, 129 digs, 20 blocks, 10 assists and four aces for the Gaels in limited action last fall. She was named West Coast Conference All-Academic Honorable Mention last fall and also earned all-tournament honors at the season-opening Husky Invitational.

“When Sarah is playing for Team Canada we all wave the Maple Leaf,” said Saint Mary’s head coach Rob Browning. “We are so proud for Sarah to have the opportunity to represent her great country, and we know how much it means to her. It’s an amazing opportunity to represent one’s country, and she’s representing Saint Mary’s volleyball at the same time.”

Calvin is playing for Team BIP in the U23 Brijuni Division of the 2018 Global Challenge that goes from July 10-13 in Pula, Croatia. She joins nine other fellow collegiate players from all over the United States in the 10-team tournament, which includes five teams from the U.S. Calvin will play middle blocker and opposite for Team BIP after a fall campaign in which she totaled 95 blocks (four solos) and went over the 200-kills mark with 206. Calvin has twice tried out for the U.S. Women’s National Team, most recently in March.

“Lindsey earned this unique opportunity to play with other elite collegiate athletes and represent Saint Mary’s,” said Browning. “She attended the USA National Team tryout earlier this year and represented herself and us so well there. She’s going to have an amazing experience in Croatia against very good competition and we will be watching proudly.”
