VB | Saint Mary's Hosts So Cal Foes

MORAGA, Calif. — The Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team returns home this week, ready to face So Cal West Coast Conference opponents Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount on Thursday and Saturday, respectively.

Thursday, Oct. 26, 7 p.m. – Pepperdine (12-11, 4-6 WCC) vs. Saint Mary’s (6-14, 2-8 WCC)
Saturday, Oct. 28, 1 p.m. – Loyola Marymount (12-9, 5-5 WCC) vs. Saint Mary’s (6-14, 2-8 WCC)

Saint Mary’s (6-14, 2-8 WCC) swept San Francisco last week, 3-0, but fell to Santa Clara, 3-2, in five matches, moving its record to 2-8 in WCC and 1-6 on the road. The Gaels outhit the Dons .350 to .105. Sienna Young hit a team-best .650 with 14 kills. Lindsey Knudsen recorded her second double-double of the season on Saturday with 13 kills and 20 digs against Santa Clara. Lindsey Calvin hit a team-best .294 with 12 kills, second-most kills after Knudsen.

Pepperdine (12-11, 4-6 WCC) beat Saint Mary’s in their first meeting, 3-1, at the Firestone Fieldhouse. The Waves hold a 2-5 away record.

Hannah Frohling has a team-high of 317 kills (3.56 per set), 26 service aces, and 220 digs (2.47 per set). Jasmine Gross leads the team with a hitting percentage of .336 on 264 kills (2.97 per set), and has a team-best 131 blocks (1.47 per set). Outside hitter Heidi Dyer guides Pepperdine with 519 assists (6.03 per set), followed by teammate Blossom Sato with 462 (9.24 per set). Pepperdine has tallied 25 more service aces than its opponents with 129 on the year.

Loyola Marymount (12-9, 5-5 WCC) fell to both nationally ranked BYU and San Diego at the Gersten Pavilion. The Lions hold a 4-4 away record.

Sara Kovac leads the team with 237 kills (3.04 per set). Megan Rice records a second-best of 217 kills, hitting 2.89 per set. Jessie Prichard carries the Lion’s with 447 assists (5.73 per set). Middle-blocker, Alexis Morrow has a team-high of 72 blocks, as Kristen Castellanos guides Loyola Marymount with 303 digs (3.88 per set). The Lion’s outhit their opponents 13.42 to 12.33.

Saint Mary’s begins a three-match road trip spanning two weeks, starting at nationally ranked San Diego and BYU on Nov. 2 and 4. They then travel to Stockton to face Pacific on Nov. 11.

Another competitive match highlighted the Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team’s action at Pepperdine Saturday, but it was the Waves who came out on top, holding off the Gaels in a 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-20, 25-19) win at Firestone Fieldhouse.

VB | Gaels Drop Hard-Fought Match In Five At LMU
The Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball team fought back all night Thursday, pushing its West Coast Conference match at Loyola Marymount to a deciding fifth set, but that’s where the Lions would pull the comeback, closing on an 8-3 win to hold on for a 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 25-16, 23-25, 15-11) win at Gersten Pavilion.
