VB | No. 8 BYU Battles Back Against Gaels
The Saint Mary’s women’s volleyball played right alongside another nationally ranked opponent Thursday, but it was No. 8 BYU who escaped with a thrilling five-set West Coast Conference victory, fighting back from being down 2-0 to win 3-2 (22-25, 20-25, 25-25, 25-23, 15-10) at McKeon Pavilion.

The Toreros (17-4, 10-1 WCC) took down then-No. 8 BYU on Saturday in a matchup of the WCC's top two teams, beating the Cougars in Provo, Utah, 3-1, in front of more than 3,300 BYU fans. The win put USD in a tie for first place in the WCC and jumped it five spots in the American Volleyball Coaches Association national poll to No. 13 this week. San Diego is 6-2 at home this season with both losses coming against top-10 ranked teams (No. 4 Texas on Sept. 2, No. 9 BYU on Sept. 30).

Jayden Kennedy leads the team with 3.86 kills per set (282 total), third-best in the WCC. Addie Picha's 1.39 blocks per set (92 total) are No. 2 in the conference, as are Lizzy Tardieu's 4.23 digs per set (309 total). The Toreros are among the conference's top-four in five categories, including leading all teams in kills (14.84 per set) and assists (14.08 per set).

The Cougars (21-2, 10-1 WCC) saw its 13-match winning streak come to an end at home Saturday versus San Diego, as the Toreros handed BYU its first home loss of the year, 3-1. The defeat pulled the two teams into a tie atop the WCC standings. BYU had won 20 straight at home dating back to last season, including seven in a row this season.

The Cougars are one of the best blocking teams in the country, ranking No. 11 in blocks per set (2.96) and 17th in total blocks (251.5). They are also No. 23 in the nation with a .266 hitting percentage. Cosy Burnett is 27th in the country with 1.39 blocks per set, while Veronica Jones-Perry is ranked in the NCAA for points per set at 5.32.

Saint Mary's will continue the road trip to Stockton to take on WCC opponent Pacific on Nov. 11 at Alex G. Spanos Center.
