Saint Mary's College of California is committed and obligated to the principle of institutional control in operating its athletics program in a manner consistent with the letter and the spirit of NCAA, WCC Conference, and Institutional rules and regulations. In striving for academic and athletic excellence, Saint Mary's College seeks the highest standard of ethical conduct. Involvement by representatives of Saint Mary's College athletics interests is critical to the program's success; however, any inappropriate or even inadvertent activity could jeopardize both the eligibility of current or prospective student-athletes and the compliance of the Institution with NCAA regulations.
Each individual involved in the operation of the athletics program is obligated to maintain competency in knowledge of the rules; to act within his or her area of responsibility in full compliance with the governing legislation; and to report any violation of NCAA, WCC, or SMC rules that he or she is aware of.
Due to the complexity and ever-changing nature of the NCAA regulatory system, it is unrealistic to expect that level III and IV rules violations will ever be completely eliminated. In fact, the self-reporting of several inadvertent level III and IV violations annually is expected by both the NCAA and WCC, and viewed as evidence that compliance monitoring systems are engaged and functioning.
The primary functions of the Compliance Office:
- To educate coaches, student-athletes, staff and supporters regarding NCAA and WCC rules and the compliance expectations of the College.
- To serve coaches, student-athletes, staff and supporters by providing accurate and timely interpretations of the rules and assisting them in their compliance efforts.
- To monitor the activities of the athletics department and the College in a variety of critical areas (e.g., recruiting, eligibility certification, financial aid, amateurism, extra benefits, playing and practice season limitations) and verify compliance with all applicable rules.
- To investigate and report violations of NCAA and WCC rules.
The compliance office seeks to carry out these essential functions in a manner that promotes a positive compliance atmosphere and demonstrates an unwavering commitment to the highest standards of ethical behavior.
