BASE | UCSB Hangs On For Win Over Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. – The Gaels battled the No. 30 UCSB Gauchos to a 5-3 loss on Tuesday in a game where they fought back from a 4-1 deficit to make it a 4-3 game in the seventh. SMC is now 14-7 overall and UC Santa Barbara moved to 13-5.
Gauchos starter JD Callahan hit Christopher Campos on the first pitch he threw in the game and then walked Nathan Chong on five pitches. But he would settle in from there getting a strikeout and a double play to end the threat in the first. The Gaels wouldn't scratch across a run until the fourth and Callahan allowed just two runs (one earned) in 5.2 innings.
Saint Mary's starter Ryan Taurek got off to a good start, but ran into a little trouble in the third inning. He walked his second and third batters of the game in the third. Ryan Sanders replaced him and allowed a pair of hits that scored two runs, with one run charged to Taurek and one to Sanders for a 2-0 UCSB lead.
The Gaels got one run back in the fourth, but getting just one run rather than a crooked number when threatening offensively would happen in every inning they scored. Christian Almanza reached on an error at first by the pitcher, Chris Santiago hit a single, but Blake Mann's bunt was handled by the catcher and threw Santiago out at second. Nick Mistone grounded out to third to plate Almanza, but that would be the end of the rally.
Santa Barbara scored two more in the fifth, but Almanza unloaded on a ball to deep right field to start the sixth to cut it to a 4-2 deficit. The Gaels scored in the seventh when Chong hit a double that bounced off the wall in the right field corner to score Seth Nager and make it 4-3. That put runners on second and third with one out, but the Gauchos made a pitching change and induced pop ups by the next two batters.
Saint Mary's would have two runners in scoring position in the bottom of the eighth but left them stranded after two more Gaucho pitching changes. UCSB would tack on an insurance in the ninth before retiring the Gaels in order in the bottom of the inning to finish the game.
